Project Cost Management

This topic teaches students and community leaders how to develop and oversee a project budget. Participants will learn how to estimate costs accurately, account for unexpected expenses, and track spending throughout the project lifecycle. This module is vital for anyone managing grant money, school funds, or community donations.

Core Objectives:

  • Cost Estimating: Mastering the techniques for predicting expenses:
    • Bottom-Up Estimating: Adding up the costs of every individual work package from the WBS for high accuracy.
    • Analogous Estimating: Using the costs of previous, similar projects as a guide.
  • Determining the Budget: Aggregating the estimated costs into a formal budget and adding a Management Reserve for unforeseen events.
  • Cost Control: Learning how to monitor expenses in real-time. We introduce the concept of “Burn Rate”—how fast the project is spending its budget.
  • Managing Procurement: Basic principles for selecting vendors, comparing quotes, and ensuring the project gets what it pays for.
  • Financial Transparency: How to report on spending to stakeholders to maintain accountability and support.

Key Outcome: By the end of this topic, participants will be able to produce a professional project budget. They will gain the financial literacy required to protect their community’s resources, ensuring that every project is not only a technical success but a financial one as well.
